Castles & History
Your in 1066 Country!
Rye, East Sussex B&B

Set on the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. It’s an exciting way to discover more about the most famous date in English history.

One of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain, Bodiam was built in 1385, as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life. There are spiral staircases and battlements to explore, and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from the top of the towers. In the impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely rare example of its kind.

CAMBER CASTLE - EH (20 min walk)

The historic castle was built by Henry VIII. Camber Castle lies between Rye and Winchelsea. The ruin of an unusually unaltered artillery fort designed to guard the port of Rye.

YPRES TOWER (5 min walk)

Ypres Tower, built in 1250, is the oldest building open to the public in Rye. Located within the Tower is a rare smuggling lantern, medieval pottery, maps showing the changes to the coastline. Replica medieval weapons and other items are on display. The tower offers stunning views over the Romney marsh.

Spectacularly situated above the White Cliffs on the Kent coastline this magnificent castle boasts a fascinating history. There is more to the castle then the fort. The hillside is home to the wartime tunnels which go deep underground dover in the cliffs.

There are lots of other castles to explore, for a family day out try Leeds or Herstmonceux castle. There are also the nearby ruins of Newenden castle which are ideal for ramblers and walkers.
